Sumit Mishra belongs to a Banaras Gharana family which is into music for at least ten generation and beyond and amazingly all of them happen to be musicians and some to be icon in their field. He started his learning process from his father Pt. Sohan Lal Mishra & his uncle Pt. Mohan Lal Mishra. His family is said to be the torchbearer of the (Banaras Gharana of India. Table Maestro Pt. Bundi Maharaj Ji is his great Grandfather & his grandfather Pt. Damodar Mishra who did the same in vocal music with his superb voice & excellent presentation of Ragas.

A commerce Graduate from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, He won several awards in many cultural fests. Through musical training he learnt how to give a new dimension in Ghazal, Bhajan, Geet compositions on Indian Ragas and Raginees.

The big break in his career as a harmonium player was when he got a chance of accompanying with Padmabhusan Pandit Rajn-Sajan Mishra he had been performing as harmonium-accompanist with established artist like Padambhusan Bidhusree Girija Devi, Pandit Mohan Lal Mishra Ji, Pundit Ajoy Chakraborty, Pundit Ulhas Kasalkarji, Pandit Kaivalya Kumar Ji, Smt. Sabita Devi, Late Smt. Purnima Chaudhary, Pundit Kumar Bose Ji, Pandit Sukhvinder Singh Namdhari, Ustad Akram Khan. He consider his best performance in the presence of the Tabla-icon Late Padma Vibhusan Pandit Kishan Maharaj Ji in 'Bananas.
